The Pride of Morgan Hill was one of the most represented girl’s fastpitch organizations this past weekend at the Nor Cal Championships at the Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale, sending five teams to the tournament.
The Pride teams represented themselves well, although none of the teams made it into championship play on Sunday, where berths for ASA Nationals, Regional and California State Games were at stake.
The Pride 12-U B Gold team, as well as the Pride 14-U B Green Team, played late into Saturday, .
The Pride 12-U Gold started off strong on Friday with a 10-1 win over the Half Moon Bay Waves.
They were led by the outstanding pitching effort of Katie Mains, who stifled the Waves, along with an offensive outburst by Heather Johnson, Katie Obema and others with the 12-hit attack.
The Pride 12-U Gold came up short despite another outstanding pitching effort, losing 4-0 and then falling short late Sunday afternoon to the Belmont Blast, who eventually took second place in the B championships.
The Pride 12-U Green started off against a strong San Mateo Slammers team who contended for the championship.
Katie Machado pitched five strong innings allowing only two runs during her stint, while also picking up a base hit. Patricia Monterey paced the offense, going 2-for-3, but they came up short in a 6 -1 loss.
On Saturday morning, the Pride Green came out slow and couldn’t muster enough offense except for an RBI double by Machado and hits by Monterey and Allison Stoner, ending their championship weekend.
The Pride 14-U Green played several close ballgames. Starting on Friday against the Benicia Outlaws, Danielle Clampett led an outstanding pitching effort to keep the Pride team in the game, but they suffered a narrow 6-5 loss.
On Saturday, strong pitching was the key as Anika Mandel and Danielle Clampett teamed up to pick up a 4-2 win against Burlingame Blaze.
In a game later that afternoon, the championship run was ended as Pride Green battled back from deficits of 6-0 and 8-6 to tie the score, only to fall short in the last inning and lose 10-9.
The Pride 12-U “C” team made a strong showing as they were playing for a berth for the California State Games.
The “C” team, made up of mostly first-year Pride players, played well against other teams. Gail Wiselogel led the team, pitching several innings in two games and allowing only five runs. The offense was paced by Taylor Kiss-Lane, Sheila McClung and Maite Ourricarriet.
The Pride “C” lost a very close game in the final inning on Saturday 7-6 to the Los Gatos Magic to end their run.
All the Pride travel teams will continue to play tournaments through mid-July. The Pride will be forming teams in various age brackets for Fall Ball in mid-August.
