Three Sobrato runners placed first in their respective events, and the 4×400 relay team was second Friday during the Frosh/Soph Classic Track and Field meet at Los Gatos High School.

Sophomore Lance Wolfsmith, who’s no stranger to leading races, dominated the 3,200-meter race from the start and won by a big margin in 9:51.16 at the Top 8 Classic. Wolfsmith then anchored the 4×400 meter relay team to a 3:39.89, good for second place overall just minutes later.

Freshman Alan Rios continues to win at big invitationals. Rios placed first in the 800 at the St. Francis Invite two weeks ago, and improved by five seconds in tying for first place at the Top 8 Classic with a time of 2:01.04. It was a photo finish to the 1/100 of a second.

Sophomore Alex Meldrum set a personal best by running a 42.81, and taking first place in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Meldrum took a full second off of his previous best.

Among the girls, Ariel Mosbrucker placed second in the high jump (5-0), fifth in the long jump (15-05) and fifth in the triple jump (32-00.75) to score all 15.5 Sobrato points.

The top finishers qualify to compete in the Central Coast Section Top 8 on April 20th. The CCS Top 8 meet is where the best varsity runners and jumpers from four counties compete to give a preview of the CCS Track and Field Championships in May.
