Sobrato followed its solid win over San Benito by easily beating Del Mar 211-263 on Friday in a Blossom Valley Athletic League match at Los Lagos Golf Course.
“It tops the San Benito victory because it was a league victory,” said Bulldogs coach Norm Brown, whose team finished 3-2 in league play with the win.
Gary Leung continued his consistent play with a four-over 38.
“It was a good solid round, probably middle of the road for him,” Brown said.
Sophomore Brandon Roth joined Leung in the top foursome and fired a 41, his best round of the season.
“(Roth’s) been struggling and I think Gary helped him a lot,” Brown said.
Ron Gifford also fired a season-best round of 41. Ricky Hinman shot 45, Doug Bennett tied his best performance of the season at 46 and Michael Morin carded 48.
“We have a chance to beat anybody in our league with a round like that,” Brown said.
Sobrato began a busy week with a match against Alvarez on Monday at Gilroy Golf Course. The Bulldogs will have a rematch with the Eagles on Friday at Salinas Fairways and also will play an exhibition team tournament Thursday at CordeValle.
Sobrato is still hoping for Leung to have a chance to compete in the league finals. Because of the late initiation of the golf program at the school, it is not sanctioned by the Central Coast Section and not eligible for postseason play.
But Brown has filed a petition to Blossom Valley Athletic League commissioner Barbara Beard with hopes that Leung, who has averaged a score of 39 in 14 matches this season, will be granted an at-large berth.
“We’re hoping that the BVAL will acknowledge his play and grant him that berth,” Brown said.
The league championships are 12:30pm May 1 at Cinnabar Hills, a course at which Leung scored an even par in a nine-hole match against San Benito.
