Danielle Clampett deserved better.
The Sobrato sophomore righthander pitched a three-hitter Wednesday and yet Independence beat the Bulldogs 7-1 in a Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division game.
“She pitched well,” Sobrato coach Rob Piper said. “They only had three hits. You can’t argue with that.”
Five errors are what spelled doom for the Bulldogs.
“The errors were mostly on standard plays,” Piper said. “I always tell the girls that one error results in one run, and one run can cost you the game.”
Sobrato (7-11 overall, 2-7 BVAL) scored its run when Kristi Amundson singled, stole second and moved around on a passed ball and fielder’s choice. Amundson had two of the Bulldogs’ three hits. But Sobrato let a golden opportunity go to waste in the third when they loaded the bases with one out and failed to score.
“One hit there would have changed the game,” Piper said.
That was enough for the 76ers (4-8, 3-6), who were able to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Bulldogs on March 23 despite a paucity of hits.
Sobrato, which is in action at 3:30pm today at division-leading Branham, is looking to get untracked after losing seven straight league games. The first loss was 11-6 to the Bruins.
Piper doesn’t believe the girls are losing their confidence, despite the skid. He keeps preaching to the girls not to look at the wins or losses, but rather the effort they are putting forth.
“Effort and attitude are the two things we are focusing on,” Piper said. “I think we have been making little steps (forward) and I think other teams are making bigger steps, which is why they are beating us. But I haven’t lost faith in this team and I am still enjoying the season.”
And Piper thinks he knows just the thing to turn things around for the Bulldogs.
“We had a spaghetti dinner for team and then won two (league) games,” Piper said. “I’m thinking the same thing may work again. So we’re going to have a spaghetti dinner (Tuesday) to get our mojo back.”
