Even a default at No. 2 doubles didn’t stop Live Oak.
The Acorns defeated Willow Glen 4-3 Thursday with a somewhat altered lineup.
Three of the four singles matches went to Live Oak. In the No. 1 position, senior Eric Matsumoto won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Trevor Watson moved to the No. 2 position and also got a convincing win, 6-2, 6-0. In the No. 3 position, Yrbyn Davis got the loss but didn’t go down without a fight, forcing a third-set tiebreaker before dropping a 6-7, 6-2, 10-4 decision. Jimmy Sheddon finished off singles play by winning easily 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, Aaron Melgar and Ryan Campbell got the win in the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-1. The Acorns got the loss at No. 3 doubles as Mason Lammers and Kenny Lee fell 6-3, 6-3.
Lammers and Lee have showed significant improvement, according to Live Oak coach Jennifer Yoder.
“They have gotten better with their fundamentals and the basic stradegy of the game,” Yoder said. “They have gotten progressively better as the season has gone on.”
With the win, the Acorns moved to 7-1 in the Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division and trail only Del Mar in the standings. The Acorns host the Dons on Thursday in hopes of avenging their only league loss. The game will likely determine which team wins the BVAL West Valley Division.
“They have to be ready to play some tough competition,” Yoder said. “We have to be mentally tough and be ready to move our feet and execute. They just have to play their game.”
Live Oak is at Overfelt at 3:15pm today before hosting Del Mar on Thursday.
