On a day when hits were at a premium, defense was the key as Live Oak won a 1-0 Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division thriller Tuesday over visiting Leland.

Taylor Sutton delivered the winning run in the ninth with a sacrifice fly, but it was the defense of the San Diego State-bound shortstop and her teammates that made a winner of freshman Jenna Robertson (6-2).

Robertson started the ninth inning with a one-out double. Sarah Locarnini’s single moved courtesy runner Robin Nelson to third. Then Sutton delivered her sacrifice fly.

Defensively, Sutton turned a double play in the first inning. She finished with eight unassisted outs and assisted on two more. From her second base position, Locarnini made a running catch on a foul pop in the fifth.

Centerfielder Sabrina LaCorte turned a fly ball out into a double play in the sixth. And Robertson pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the ninth.

Brittney Ondich, who is hitting .438, and Kelly McDonald each had two hits and a walk to pace Live Oak’s offense.
