Morgan Hill – A 54-year-old Gilroy man was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of more than three times the legal limit, according to Morgan Hill Police Department Cmdr. David Swing.
Gery Steinberg was booked into Santa Clara County Jail after registering .26 on a breathalyzer test at the MHPD.
Swing said MHPD Officer Greg Dini was southbound on Monterey Road at approximately 8:15am when Steinberg allegedly pulled out in front of him, causing Dini to brake sharply to avoid a collision. As they continued south through downtown Morgan Hill, a pedestrian was crossing at Fifth Street in the number one lane, Swing said, and Steinberg drove past the pedestrian, in the number two lane, failing to stop at the crosswalk.
As they approached the intersection of Monterey Road and Dunne Avenue, Steinberg did not stop at the red light at the intersection but turned right onto West Dunne, where Dini stopped him.
“He had difficulty retrieving his identification information, and he did not perform the field sobriety test,” Swing said.
He was also driving on a suspended license for a prior DUI. Steinberg was taken to county jail because of his level of intoxication.
