Gilroy – Kevin Mom may not have been the most consistent golfer Monday at Gilroy Golf Course.
The Live Oak junior was the best, though, using birdies at Nos. 7 and 8, to shoot 2-over-par 37 to finish as medalist as the Acorns defeated crosstown rival Sobrato 211-239 in a non-league match.
“I played pretty well but my chipping could have been better,” said Mom, who had two birdies, three pars and four bogeys on a mild, windless day that was in stark contrast to a day earlier in the South County.
Mom has been a consistent golfer for Live Oak (6-8), whose best score in matches is 1-over-par at Cinnabar and Spring Valley. But his confidence received a boost Easter Sunday when he shot a sizzling 69 at San Juan Oaks that included 5-under on the front side.
Mom’s best shot Monday was on the long par-3 seventh when his tee shot landed 5 feet from the pin to set up a second straight birdie. He reached the par-5 seventh hole in two shots, hit a poor first putt but made the second for his first birdie.
Nobody else broke 40 on the day, but Acorns Kevin Kjellsen, David Cannon and Tim Dronek followed at 41, 42 and 43, respectively.
Kjellsen had a chance to break 40 but double-bogeyed the ninth hole. Dronek hit what his playing partners estimated was a 340 yard drive on No. 6, setting up a 60-degree wedge second shot.
Gary Leung shot 40 to pace Sobrato, mixing four pars with five bogeys. After shooting even-par at Cinnabar recently, it left the Bulldogs’ senior frustrated.
“I don’t play well here for some reason,” Leung said.
Nevertheless, he was happy to get a chance to compete against Live Oak.
“It was awesome to play against them,” Leung said.
Brandon Roth shot 49 for the Bulldogs (2-9), while Ron Gifford, Ricky Hinman and Michael Morin all shot 50.
