San Jose – Sobrato did an excellent job dealing with windy conditions Tuesday, defeating San Benito 228-231 at Summit Pointe Golf Club.

Gary Leung rebounded from what had been a sub-par effort for him a day earlier at Gilroy Golf Course by shooting even-par 36 in 30 mile per hour winds and lightning-quick greens.

“He said he was going to go out and play,” Bulldog coach Norm Brown said of Leung, who shot 40 at Gilroy. “I think he wanted to prove something to himself. He’s been around par in most matches.”

Sobrato (3-9) also got excellent play from Ron Gifford, who shot 43.

“It was a big improvement for him,” Brown said of Gifford, who shot 50 a day before. “The conditions were tough, the course was tough with fast greens, but the guys played well.”

Other Bulldogs who scored were Ricky Hinman, 46; Michael Morin, 50; and Doug Bennett, 53.

“It was our best win of the season for the conditions and that we only played their one time before,” Brown said. “San Benito beat us twice already before, so it was nice to get them this time.”

Leigh 213, Live Oak 226

The Acorns battled the wind and cold Wednesday against Leigh at Summit Pointe Golf Course in Milpitas. The Longhorns handled the elements a little better, winning the Blossom Valley Athletic League match 213-226.

The Acorns knew they were in for a tough match against the division leader, but looked forward to the challenge. Live Oak had a strong start with their leaders golfing at close to par. However, the team gave away several strokes on the finishing holes.

“We had a chance to beat this team,” multiple players commented. They felt they let this one slip away.

Tim Dronek led the Acorns with a 41, just missing overall medalist by one stroke. Also contributing were Kevin Kjellsen, Kevin Mom, David Cannon and Zack Colton.

Live Oak resumes competition in two weeks against Oak Grove at Coyote Creek and Silvercreek Golf Courses. Those are their final two matches of the BVAL regular season.
