San Jose – John Ellis couldn’t overcome a Bland performance Sunday at the San Jose International Open.

Adam Bland fired a final-round five-under-par 67 and then made an 18-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to win the opening event of the Canadian Tour at The Golf Club at Boulder Ridge.

Ellis was in the four-man group that made the playoff. The Morgan Hill golfer who plays out of Boulder Ridge began the day three strokes behind Bret Guetz, who shot 78.

Guetz shot himself out of the tournament when he had two double bogeys and four bogeys and took 42 strokes on the back nine. Guetz, of Scottsdale, Ariz., shot a course-record 62 Friday to break the mark previously held by PGA player Arron Oberholser and Ellis.

Ellis, meanwhile, overcame an opening-round 73 when he shot 64 Friday to move within two strokes of Guetz. Ellis shot 70 Saturday and actually led the tournament after starting with six birdies on his first 10 holes. The winds kicked up as he played the back nine and Ellis bogeyed four holes to finish three shots behind Guetz.

Ellis was at even-par 72 Sunday to join Scott Gibson and Spencer Levin in the playoff. Levin was the low amateur at the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
