Morgan Hill – In what is either a coincidence or a deliberate targeting of the popular Mexican bakeries, the Pink Elephant Bakery in the Morgan Hill Plaza was robbed at gunpoint Thursday evening, just days after the Gilroy branch of the bakery was also robbed at gunpoint.
Thursday’s robbery took place at approximately 7:40pm, according to Morgan Hill Police Department Cmdr. David Swing. Two Hispanic males entered the business, and one of them pointed a sawed-off shotgun at the female clerk, demanding in Spanish for the clerk to open the register, Swing said. They forced her to turn around and face away from them while they removed the money from the register.
The men took an undisclosed amount of money and left the store, and the clerk immediately heard a vehicle leaving the area but did not see the vehicle the men left in. She told officers she believes the vehicle was southbound on Monterey Road.
The clerk, who was alone in the store at the time, was not injured during the robbery. She described the men as dressed in black, one of them with a stocking cap over his face, the other wearing a stocking cap or beanie type of hat. She said the men were in their mid-20’s, both average height. One of the males was average build, she told police, perhaps weighing 160-170, while the other male was stockier, maybe weighing 200-210.
The stockier man was holding the shotgun and is described as having a medium complexion with pock marks, clean shaven and light brown eyes. He was wearing a dark or navy blue stocking cap, a gray or black Pendleton-type jacket and unknown color pants with black cloth gloves.
The other man was wearing a gray jacket with light blue sleeves, black denim jeans, black shoes, black cloth gloves and black nylon pantyhose over his face.
Swing said no information was available about tattoos or other distinguishing marks.
The Gilroy robbery occurred at 8:15pm Monday at the Pink Elephant Bakery on East 10th Street. Two men entered the store and demanded money while one of them pointed a gun at the female clerk. The clerk and a co-worker were able to tell Gilroy police a third man drove the two men away in a white four-door sedan.
“We will certainly be in contact with the Gilroy Police Department,” Swing said Monday. “We’ll put our collective minds together to potentially solve these crimes.”
The Pink Elephant bakeries, including the chain’s flagship store in San Jose, are owned by the Meza family of San Jose. The Gilroy store has never been robbed or burglarized, according to the family, but there have been multiple burglaries at the Morgan Hill location.
