Morgan Hill – A San Jose man is in custody in Santa Clara County Jail charged with attempted homicide after an incident early Saturday morning in the parking lot near the Morgan Hill Bowl in Tennant Station shopping center.
Shannon Lacey, 26, was booked into jail after allegedly stabbing Ezequiel Pando, 24, of San Jose, with a three-inch pocket knife.
Pando’s left lung collapsed when he was stabbed. He was taken to San Jose Regional Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Monday and will likely remain hospitalized for several more days.
Morgan Hill police Cmdr. Joe Sampson said the stabbing occurred at approximately 1:30am Saturday. Morgan Hill police Cpl. Ray Ramos and officers Joe Burdick and Jason Broyer were walking outside the Strixe Lounge at the Morgan Hill Bowl when they saw a fight involving six to eight males at the eastern end of the parking lot.
Sampson said the officers detained all of the suspects and began to investigate the incident, when they discovered Pando had been stabbed. Paramedics were called, and officers quickly contained the crime scene. After all the suspects were ordered to lie down, officers noticed one man attempting to walk away. The man, later identified as Lacey, reached for his waistband and was immediately handcuffed. A bloody three-inch pocket knife was found in Lacey’s waistband, Sampson said.
Morgan Hill police detectives and the department’s Street Crimes team were called to assist with further investigation. It was determined that the fight between the suspects started when racially derogatory remarks were hurled back and forth, Sampson said.
The case has been submitted to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office for review, he added, and has not been classified as a hate crime at this time but is under investigation for possible hate-crime enhancements.
Lacey was the only one of the suspects arrested after the incident.
