Morgan Hill – A 24-year-old man believed to be a Morgan Hill resident was booked into Santa Clara County Jail early Saturday morning after he allegedly tried to strangle his girlfriend and evaded police.
According to Morgan Hill police Cmdr. David Swing, officers became involved in the case at approximately 2:30am when the father of the alleged victim called to report his car was stolen.
Officers responded to the residence and took the report, Swing said; meanwhile, a witness to the attempted strangling, which allegedly took place at a bar in San Jose, gave the victim, 31, of Hollister, a ride to the residence on Jasmine Way.
The victim and the suspect have been in a dating relationship for two years and have a child together, she told police.
As officers were taking the report for the stolen vehicle, Swing said, the suspect was spotted driving by in the stolen vehicle, but officers were unable to stop him. Later, he was spotted again, this time on northbound U.S. 101, but again was too far away for officers to catch up to him.
Approximately 45 minutes later, Swing said, the suspect was seen in the area of Monterey Highway at Bailey Avenue north of Morgan Hill. Morgan Hill police officer Rod Krewson followed him to Cottle Road, where he did not immediately stop when signaled to pull over. He eventually stopped and was taken into custody, charged with alleged spousal abuse, auto theft, evading a police officer and probation violation.
The suspect was arrested without incident.
