Morgan Hill – Future Farmers of America (FFA) students at the Morgan Hill Unified School District’s two comprehensive high schools continue to excel in regional activities, most recently participating in a soil judging contest and raising money for both FFA chapters.

The Sobrato High School Chapter recently found out it now has the chapter’s first regional office. Jenenetta Marisclon, chapter vice president, was elected 2007-08 South Coast regional treasurer. She and five other regional officers will represent thousands of FFA members from Los Angeles to San Jose.

Live Oak High FFA member Abe Butte was elected regional president on May 8, the same day he was being recognized by the MHUSD Board of Education for placing second in the regional Rotary speech contest.

In another first for the Sobrato chapter, Linda Pospishek received her state FFA degree in San Luis Obispo on April 1, the first Sobrato FFA degree recipient.

In mid-April, students from both chapters attended the State Leadership Conference in Fresno. After the conference, 15 FFA students from three schools represented the Santa Clara section at the annual Loma Prietta land conservancy soil and land judging contest. Eight Live Oak students, four Sobrato students and three San Benito students competed in the contest.

The San Benito team came in first, the Sobrato team came in second place and the two Live Oak teams came in third and fourth place.

The students study soil because it is important to the health of farming. Soil knowledge is also important to developers, architects and city planners.

To fund FFA programs and trips, the Morgan Hill Ag Foundation recently raised more than $10,000 with its fourth annual Morgan Hill Ag Foundation Wine Auction. A live and silent auction, along with the picturesque setting of Guglielmo Winery and plenty of food, wine and beer provided a pleasant evening to friends and family of the two FFA chapters, as well as community members who enjoy a fun event.

Money raised at the event is used to fund scholarships for graduating FFA members as well as chapter activities.
