Morgan Hill – Just days after becoming the new CEO of nursing facility Pacific Hills Manor, Valerie Alves joined the Morgan Hill Senior Advisory Commission July 18.

The Morgan Hill City Council appointed Alves, 45, to the seven-person commission after interviewing three applicants for the two-year seat. The members volunteer their time.

Alves reacted with excitement when notified by The Times.

“That’s wonderful news,” she said. “I’ve been working with seniors for a long time, and feel I can use my expertise as a dietitian in senior nutrition to make sure we are meeting their needs.”

Alves added as the population of older residents grows, as is expected in Santa Clara County and across the nation in coming decades, more resources will need to be devoted to senior activities and programs.

The Senior Advisory Commission meets at 1:30pm on the first Tuesday of the month at the Centennial Recreation Center, which houses the senior center and a low-cost senior nutrition program on weekdays.

The commission is responsible for advising the Morgan Hill City Council on policies affecting the local older population. The group addresses issues such as senior center activities, sidewalk accessibility, transportation, health care, nutrition and other senior-related issues.

Alves has worked with seniors since 1993. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and clinical dietetics from UC Berkeley and has worked as a dietitian for Regency Health Services/SunBridge Healthcare, Inc. in Martinez, Watsonville Nursing and Rehabilitation Facilities and Pacific Hills Manor. She was named CEO this month.
