Support local festivities by opening your wallet or offering
your services for next year’s Fourth of July
Imagine being a citizen of Saudi Arabia where police can arrest you for criticizing the monarchy. Or living in other fascist countries such as Bhutan, Burma and Oman, whose governments kill democratic dissidents for demanding freedom of speech.
Knowing that the Declaration of Independence asserts and the Constitution guarantees our inalienable rights – life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness – is what
Morgan Hill’s special Fourth of July festival celebrates year after year.
But Morgan Hill’s non-profit Independence Day Celebrations, Inc. festivities don’t come without a price. Although the festival partners with the city, it remains a completely all-volunteer, self-funded entity and needs donations and participation to stay afloat. While the city rents the streets to hold the festival and helps with insurance and services, the non-profit group pays the remainder of the party’s bills.
And what a worthwhile party it is.
It’s Northern California’s largest Independence Day celebration, unique for its hometown feel and family spirit. It’s brought to us by a dedicated and passionate 30-member committee The events that make the festival spectacular begin in June with the Fire Cracker Golf Classic and continue with the Patriotic Sing at Britton Middle School, followed by the street dance. On the Fourth you can enjoy a pancake breakfast, participate in a 5K run/walk, watch Santa Clara County’s official Fourth of July parade, visit a car show, take in band performances at Morgan Hill’s Community Park and end the day with the amazing display of fireworks at dusk at Morgan Hill’s Community Park.
The celebration that draws around 50,000 people to Morgan Hill showcases all that is wonderful about the American experience – inclusion, service, volunteerism, courage, hard work, diversity, cooperation.
The festivities carried a $125,000 price tag last year, a number that’s expected to increase to nearly $140,000 this year due to rising fuel prices, insurance costs, municipal fees and fireworks expenses. It takes more than 200 volunteers to run the festivities.
We thank the many volunteers who made the festivities happen this year and every year. Morgan Hill should be proud of being a central Fourth of July attraction for out-of-towners. Now that you’ve had a chance to enjoy the celebrations and see how well they’re organized for the community’s benefit, it’s a perfect time to open your wallet to contribute.
