Police remind residents to hide valuables in vehicles

Labor Day DUI Enforcement

Santa Clara County – Law enforcement officials will be on the lookout for reckless and drunken drivers in the annual Labor Day “Avoid the 13” crackdown beginning Friday and ending early Tuesday morning.

Extra officers will be on duty to man sobriety checkpoints, many as designated “DUI cars” specifically looking for impaired drivers.

Potentially one of the deadliest weekends of the year, the Labor Day three-day holiday brings out law enforcement officers in droves, with ramped up patrols from Morgan Hill police, Sheriff’s Office deputies and California Highway Patrol officers, as well as law enforcement agencies throughout the county.

Jan Ford, public information officer for Avoid the 13, said there were 88 arrests in the county during last year’s Labor Day weekend. Law enforcement agencies advise residents to designate a driver, or stay in the same location if they have been drinking or call a taxi. Besides the deadly nature of drinking and driving, there is a heavy financial cost as well, with fees and costs potentially reaching more than $10,000.

Morgan Hill’s police officers are even more alert for drunk drivers right now, as one of their own was recently hit by a drunk driver, causing a concussion and totaling a brand-new police cruiser.
