Live Oak coach selected Coach of the Year; several Sobrato
players honored
Morgan Hill – For leading the Live Oak Acorns to their second consecutive Tri-County Athletic League title Acorn coach Tony Goble was selected the TCAL’s coach of the year.
“I has some good help and that’s key,” said Goble of receiving the honor. “It’s not just me, it’s my assistant coaches as well.”
Along with the coach of the year honors, the Acorns had 10 players picked for the various TCAL all-league teams, while the Sobrato Bulldogs had six players selected.
Acorn seniors Anthony Avalos and Garrett Frechette were voted co-MVPs of the league and selected to the TCAL’s first team all-league. Avalos and Frechette were the top two players in the TCAL in goals and assists.
“Most people were in agreement that Anthony and Garrett were the top two kids in the league,” said Goble. “One set off the other. One couldn’t have been what they were without the other.”
Teammates Tim Kotyuk and Sheldon Steenhuis were also chosen for the first team.
“Both Tim and Sheldon had outstanding years,” said Goble.
For the Bulldogs, juniors Murilo Almeida and Sam Stoner were selected to the first team.
“Absolutely they deserved to be on the first team,” said Sobrato coach Ricardo Martinez. “Murilo was a team leader, motivator and Sam was aggressive and reads the game well.”
Live Oak defender Matt Altamirano earned the sophomore player of the year honor, as well as being selected for the second team all-league with teammates Josh Smith, Baldomero Perez and Johann Abordo.
“That’s a pretty big honor for Matt,” said Goble. “He was one of the solid guys back there.”
Sophomore defender Shibin Tharayil and junior goalkeeper Trevor Newcomb were voted to the all-league second team for Sobrato.
“Trevor did a great job in goal and kept us in games. He was consistent throughout the whole season,” said Martinez. “Shibin was a solid defender. He very rarely got beat.”
Daniel Reyes and Rene Hernandez were both selected as all-league honorable mentions.
Rounding out Sobrato’s selections as honorable mentions were freshmen Arturo Ceja and Jesus Del Real.
