BookSmart Owners Deserve Appreciation

Dear Editor,

There may be problems at the new BookSmart location, but the owners need to be publicly thanked for going out of their way to provide space so that Morgan Hill’s Public Access TV station can continue to exist after city funding

stopped. Cinda and Brad did not have to provide space and access to us, but the citizens and TV station volunteers are better off for their generosity.

Birds Threatened at Community Park

Dear Editor,

A solution needs to be addressed to our Community Park to prevent total destruction of the bird sanctuary that used to exist.

I am a 22-year Morgan Hill resident and have enjoyed the park to relax in or feed the ducks and geese or just enjoy the atmosphere. This Community Park was (and isn’t now) a resting place for migrating water fowl on their way north. Large flights of geese, up to 60 geese in a week’s time, would rest here, but not now.

In talking to another person at the park I asked, “Why do the ducks and geese fly away when you try to feed them?” His answer was, “There are people who come down here just to throw pine cones or rocks at them and kill them.” The resident geese population has decreased over 50 percent and today there are very few left.

On a day I was there, I had taken a very large bag of small cut up pieces of bread to feed the ducks and geese. I was dismayed when I saw that next to the parking area was a new section of asphalt encroaching the lawn area. To me, this invasion ruins the park and the atmosphere of peace.

The area where the new Senior Center and parking lot is has taken up the area where the ducks and geese used to sleep at night.

I suggest that the area around the pond be fenced in so the birds can live without being chased or killed. Or, perhaps a crime camera could be mounted to survey the pond area with a monitor screen in the police stations so the vandals at the park could be punished.

Could it be that someone is using our ducks and geese for food on their table? This happened at Lake Merritt in Oakland several years ago.

President Isn’t Listening to the American People

Dear Editor,

President Bush has announced he will escalate the war in Iraq by sending more troops into the civil war. The president’s plan ignores the American people who voted for change in November, and who continue to demand we bring our troops home.

Over the past few weeks, the military, the generals and independent panels appointed by the president have said that increasing the number of troops will not help the situation. Why then would the president go against the recommendations of his top advisors?

This clearly is a political ploy, and it must be stopped before more American lives are lost. Democrats like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid should continue to question the president over this foolish plan, and do whatever needs to be done to stop it in Congress. The people made their voice heard, and if the president isn’t going to listen, the Democratic Congress will.
