Offended by Burger King poster gang sign

I have never written to any newspaper. This is my first time, but on Oct. 28 at 1:25 p.m. I stopped at the Burger King on 830 E. Dunne Ave., in Morgan Hill and was upset to see a sponsor poster with writing on it that said Southside Sur 13. I asked for the manager and I asked him if he was gang related, and he said why. I pointed at the sign taped to his drive through window and his response was that it was just a joke and he got upset because I told him to please remove it. Does Burger King allow its managers to post gang related items on posters that are for a good cause? Doesn’t this manager know he can cause a big problem if someone of another gang would drive up to that window? I hope he didn’t post it up after I left. If he did he is looking for trouble.

  • Dear Burger King customer:

Red Phone visited the Burger King on East Dunne Avenue and didn’t see the poster that you’re referring to, caller. The reference to Southside Sur 13 is related to the Norteño gang, as the number 13 stands for the letter N in the alphabet, which is used by members of this gang to identify themselves. The new manager there assured us that a poster like that would not be allowed defaced with such gang writing. She said she’s careful about the signage posted at the restaurant.

Red Phone also contacted Denise Wilson, a spokeswoman for Burger King Corporation in Miami, Fla., who informed us this restaurant is a franchise and information about any gang-related sign posted at the business would have to come from its owners. In an e-mail to the Red Phone, Wilson obviously stated the Burger King brand does not support any gang activity and thanked the Red Phone for bringing the issue to her attention.

Target’s Trash

Ever since the new Target store opened, the trash bins have been overflowing and litter just blows through the parking lot. Who is responsible for the upkeep of the new mall’s property?

  • Dear Anti-Litter:

Garbage overflowing from trash cans and blowing through a parking lot is disgusting, caller. Target is responsible for its trash pick up. Red Phone believes most of the overflow is caused because Target is a new store and it’s the holiday season. Joshua Thomas, a spokesperson for Target, thanked the Red Phone for bringing the issue to the store’s attention. He said the garbage bins in front of the stores are checked and changed routinely, up to four or five times each day. He said the Target team is happy to monitor this situation and will increase the frequency of garbage pick-up, if needed. He said in the future, if any or our readers have questions or concerns about Target, they should stop at the store’s guest service desk or look for a team member in red and khaki. Caller, if this problem persists, we encourage you to contact the property manager who is the developer and also speak directly to store management.
