MORGAN HILL
After last Friday’s dismal 41-7 road loss to the Pioneer Mustangs, the Live Oak football team hopes to kick start their offense against the Lincoln Lions (3-2-1) tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Richert Field.
“Nothing went our way. We came out flat and they came out hyped on revenge from last year,” head coach Jon Michael Porras said of the Acorns game against Pioneer. “We had over 300 yards of offense, but we just couldn’t get the ball in.”
Junior quarterback Jeff Roberts had over 100 yards rushing and the Acorns only TD, and senior wide receiver Tim O’Rourke had six catches for 80 yards.
“He’s turned into a force out there,” Porras said of O’Rourke. “Definitely a bright spot that we hope to utilize.”
In their loss to the Mustangs, the Acorns old nemesis, turnovers, came back into play.
“That was one of our worst games, as far as execution, this season,” Porras said. “They got us on a bad day and ran with it.”
While the Acorns have already clinched a playoff spot in the BVAL, Porras is stressing the importance of tonight’s game as a pre-cursor to the playoffs.
“This is a big time game for us,” Porras said. “You want something that you earn, not something you’re given.
“We have to think last weekend was a fluke that we got out of our system … Sometimes humble pie doesn’t taste good but it makes things work.”
The Acorns could potentially face the Sobrato Bulldogs (5-0-1 in the West Valley Division) in the BVAL playoffs, but it that meeting on how teams are seeded after this weekend.
“That would be exciting,” Porras said. “That would be the best matchup for the community … it’s a coin flip though.”
Regardless, the Live Oak team will take on the Lions with their goal of practicing on Thanksgiving Day.
“November is always an exciting time but you can’t miss a beat,” Porras said.
