The Live Oak High School Athletic department announced the grade reports for fall sports teams on Monday, and the overall grade point average of all fall sports student-athletes at Live Oak was a stellar 3.23.
“We are extremely proud of the effort our student-athletes made not only on the playing fields but more importantly in the classroom,” Live Oak athletic director Mark Cummins said. “Our coaching staff does a tremendous job of making sure our student-athletes priorities are in the right place.”
Nintey three percent (14/15) of all fall sports teams had a team grade point average over 3.0.
The girls tennis team led the way with a 3.66 GPA followed closely by the girls golf team with a GPA of 3.65.
The only team that did not have a team grade point average of 3.0 or better was the varsity football team, which had an overall GPA of 2.9, missing the mark by 0.1.
The Live Oak football team, which did not lose a single player due to academic ineligibility this season, competes in the Central Coast Section Championship title game at 7 p.m. on Saturday night at San Jose City College against No.1 seed Archbishop Riordan High School.
Fifteen percent of Live Oak fall sports student-athletes achieved a 4.0 grade point average or better, and 62 percent achieved over a 3.0 grade point average.
Overall, 18 percent of the Acorn student body competed on a fall sports team.
Live Oak is a member of the Blossom Valley Athletic League which is comprised of 24 schools. Those 24 schools are divided into three divisions of eight by strength of team and program.
The Mt. Hamilton Division (A) is the top division of competition followed by the Santa Teresa Division (B) and West Valley Division (C).
Four of the fall athletic teams at Live Oak participated in the Mt. Hamilton Division and the other three in the Santa Teresa Division.
“Not only were our student-athletes competing at a high level on the field against top competition, but our student-athletes were also raising the bar in the classroom,” Cummins said. “With winter sports underway our winter sport coaches will push our student-athletes to reach their potential not only on the fields and courts, but in the classroom as well. They will continue the strong tradition Live Oak has established over the past 100 years both athletically and academically.”
