The Live Oak softball team used some extra-inning dramatics to earn a 7-4 win Tuesday over Piedmont Hills.
The Acorns scored three runs in the ninth inning for the victory.
“Our bats went to the wall and our girls really pulled through,” said coach Barry McDonnell.
While their ninth-inning surge was the determining factor, it wouldn’t have been possible without the Acorns seventh-inning rally. Trailing 4-2, Live Oak scored twice to send the game to extra innings.
Live Oak got a complete game from Tricia Goularte, who struck out 10 and gave up six hits and four earned runs.
Britney Ondich went 4-for-5 on the day and Sarah Locarnini went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Kourtney Kientzy went 3-for-4 with a sacrifice as Live Oak pounded out 15 hits.
At 2-0 in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mt. Hamilton Division and 6-2 overall, the Acorns are looking to build on their solid start in hopes of challenging for a league title.
“The league is pretty evenly matched,” McDonnell said.. “We have a chance at winning it. All the teams have good pitching so it should be interesting to see where we end up. There are definitely some good teams in our league.”

At 6-1 in the Blossom Valley Athletic League this season, the Acorns have had their way with opponents this year in the Santa Teresa Division. Tuesday was no different as the Acorns breezed past Andrew Hill 6-1.
No. 2 singles player Eric Matsumoto won 6-3, 6-3, and No. 4 singles player Jimmy Sheddon won his match in dominant fashion, 6-0, 6-0.
Yrbyn Davis got his victory at No. 3 singles in three sets, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. No. 1 singles player Trevor Watson suffered the only loss of the day, falling 2-6, 6-3, 5-7.
The Acorns swept the doubles action to finish off the day. The top two doubles teams won in straight sets as Aaron Melgar and Ryan Cambell beat their opponent 7-5, 6-0, and the senior duo of Kevin Parsons and Scott Alexander won 7-5, 6-3. In the No. 3 slot, underclassmen Mason Lammers and Kenny Lee won their match in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 7-4.
“They’re doing really well,” coach Jennifer Yoder said of the Acorns. “Every expectation I’ve had they’ve pulled through. I’ve expected them to win and they’ve been doing that consistently.”
