The meandering striping on Depot Street between E. Dunne and

WHEN CAN I GET THROUGH?

“I am curious when Walnut Grove Drive (behind the Home Depot) will open for traffic. It seems like it has been paved, striped and lit for a while now but is still barricaded. Thanks!”

RED PHONE

The opening of Walnut Grove Drive that connects E. Dunne Avenue and San Pedro Avenue was held up until all the street lighting was in place and working perfectly. Karl Bjarke, deputy director of Morgan Hill Public Works – Engineering, said it was a safety issue, but the road is now open for traffic.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

“I drove down the newly finished Depot Street last week to find that the worker who put in the lane markings must have been intoxicated when performing this task. For such a short straight street I can’t get over the number of jogs left and right. Is this for real or a temporary striping job?

Also, on E. Main Avenue the city repaved from Walnut Grove Drive to U.S. 101 last year. However, some of the worst sections of this road are from the El Toro Elementary School to Walnut Grove Drive. Are there any plans to fix that section of road, specifically a large drop just past Grand Prix Way while driving east?”

RED PHONE

Thanks for the questions, caller. Concerning the striping on Depot Street, there are parking considerations on alternating sides of the street as you make your way from E. Main Avenue to E. Dunne Avenue. Before the road was redesigned, Depot Street only had room for parking on on e side of the road. Now, the roadway widens on one side of the street as you approach a parking area, squeezing the lane opposite this area into a narrower roadway. Not very attractive, we agree, but a little safer for parked vehicles. Watch out for the new stop sign at the intersection of Depot and E. Third streets.

The repaving on E. Main Avenue is an ongoing effort and it appears there have been repairs and resealing in patches along that stretch of road as our community continues to grow. Mori Struve, deputy director of Morgan Hill

Public Works – Operations, informed the Red Phone that state money coming into his office for surface transportation work will be used this summer, beginning sometime in August or September, on E. Main Avenue from U.S. 101 all the way to Peak Avenue. The street will finally receive the overdue attention it needs.
