Morgan Hill – Dress-up days and spirit rallies happening this week are precursors to a much anticipated event at the Morgan Hill School District’s two comprehensive high schools, the fall Homecoming celebration this weekend.

Every year on the Friday afternoon of Homecoming weekend, Live Oak High School’s long-standing tradition is played out as the school’s clubs and Homecoming Court parade through the city.

The court is made up of students elected by their peers to represent their clubs and their classes. Students vote during the week to elect their favorites, which are announced during halftime of the Homecoming game.

The parade starts at the school, 1505 East Main Ave., and continues west on East Main Avenue, winding through the downtown. The clubs and each student class – freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors – create floats, and Morgan Hill residents line the streets to enjoy their creative efforts. This year’s parade will start after school gets out on Friday at approximately 2:30pm.

Sobrato High School started its own traditions last year, with a night rally and bonfire the day before the Homecoming game. This year, the rally will be in the gym at 6:45pm on Friday, with the bonfire to follow in the back field at 8:30pm. Class floats parade around the school at 1pm on Friday, and judges will choose the best, based on several categories, including spirit and student participation.

Each will have spirit week, leading up to the weekend festivities. At Live Oak, the week started with “Sports Day” on Monday, then “Twin Day” on Tuesday, “Rescue Me Day” on Wednesday, “Decades Day” on Thursday and ending the week with “Spirit Day.”

Sobrato students started the week in their PJ’s, then donned their animal print clothing for “Wild Animal Tuesday,” each class with its own animal, but Wednesday will be a bit more somber, as students are asked to dress in black, for the day of sorrow for the Yerba Buena Warriors, the team the Bulldogs need to beat during the Homecoming game. Thursday is “Tarzan and Jane Day,” and students are asked to dress like their favorite jungle or “Bedrock” couples or as twins, and then will end the week, like their cross-town cohorts, dressing in school colors for “Spirit Day.”

And finally, after the week-long buildup, the schools will try to beat their opponents on the football field, with a special halftime presentation of the Homecoming Court.

The Acorns will host Branham High at 7pm on Friday, while Sobrato takes on Yerba Buena at 5pm on Saturday. Later, Bulldogs can dance the night away – at least from 8-11pm – at the Sobrato gym.

This year’s Homecoming is particularly special for Sobrato, as it is the first year there are alumni to actually “come home.” The school’s first seniors graduated in June.
