Morgan Hill – With a 10-2 overall record, the Sobrato girls tennis team heads into the singles and doubles tournament playoffs today tied for first place with Del Mar High School.
On Tuesday the Bulldogs shut out the Andrew Hill Falcons 7-0 at home.
Going into the match Sobrato was in a three-way tie for first place with Del Mar and Willow Glen, which played each other on the same day, and the victory over Andrew Hill propelled Sobrato into a first-place tie with Del Mar.
“Andrew Hill has come a long way over the season,” Sobrato head coach Randy Barbaglia said. “Their playing ability has really improved since the beginning.”
The No. 2 match featuring Allie Pecsok, of Sobrato; and Tiffany Vu, of Andrew Hill, was the match to watch as Pecsok ran back and forth across the court, and up to the net and back, defeating her opponent in two sets 6-0, 6-1.
Vu and Pecsok rallied throughout the match but Pecsok’s well-placed returns, scorching serves, and ability to run to the ball proved too much for her counterpart.
Pecsok, who is undefeated in league, is regularly the first player on Sobrato to finish her matches, and Tuesday was no different.
On Oct. 12, Pecsok similarly defeated Vu in the first round of the division playoffs, and was the only Sobrato player to finish her match.
The first round of the tournament was cancelled due to rain, but re-scheduled for today from 11am-5pm at Pioneer High School, 1290 Blossom Hill Road, in San Jose.
Pecsok’s win advances her to the next round of the tournament, and the freshman is quietly optimistic about her chances in the second round.
“Hopefully I can win and make it farther,” she said. “I’m just playing my game an trying to let it go by … really, it’s just another match.”
Other Bulldogs competing in the division tournament are No. 1 singles freshman Alexa Watanabe, the No.1 doubles duo of Allison Stoner and Katie Martin, and No. 2 doubles Amy Morimoto and Sarah Martin.
“They’re supposed to play only two matches per day but because of last Friday’s rainout they could end up playing a total of three or four matches,” Barbaglia said of today’s playoffs. “Some players have already completed the first set in the first round, so they will pick up where they left off.”
In the first round of the single elimination tournament, players are pitted against one another based on standing (i.e. No. 1s play No. 1s).
Once players are eliminated, however, position becomes irrelevant and it becomes possible for a No. 2 singles player to win it all.
“If I win out and Alexa wins out, we could end up playing each other and that wouldn’t be good,” Pecsok said with a smile.
