The Live Oak girls tennis team finished their season last Thursday with a home loss to Independence High School.

Despite the defeat, and an under .500 season, head coach Jennifer Yoder was proud of her team’s effort.

“We finished the season strong,” Yoder said. “It was fun working with these girls, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to work with them.”

Yoder said she saw a lot of improvement over the season, particularly in the doubles teams.

“Our No. 2 doubles were the most determined to work hard and try their best,” Yoder said. “I like (that kind of effort) in athletes.”

Micki Matsumoto and Charissa Hosseini were defeated in their last game of the season by Ga.Mehta-Kadakia, Westmont, 7-5, 6-2 on Thursday.

The lady Acorns played many three set matches, and all singles players had some long and tough matches on the season.

Despite quality play, Yoder said the No.1 and No.2 players needed to be a little bit more consistent to close out their matches.

“Some were wins and some were loses, but with every match they learned a bit about themselves,” Yoder said. “Tennis is not easy for the No.1 and 2.”

In last week’s 5-2 loss against Westmont High School (12-1), Yoder could not find the words to describe the loss.

In the No. 1 singles match Gh.Mehta, Westmont, defeated Karessa Watanabe 6-4, 6-3, and Yoder was ready to pull her hair out.

“I was tasting it for Karessa,” Yoder said. “She had every opportunity to win that match … it was so there and when she lost I couldn’t even express what happened.”

No. 2 Kalea Cleeton defeated her opponent in straight sets.

“Kalea played out of her skull,” Yoder said.
