Morgan Hill – In their last home game of the 2006-07 season, the Live Oak varsity field hockey team defeated Lynbrook High School to bump them out of the running for the Central Coast Section playoffs.

On Wednesday the Acorns squashed the Vikings hopes of an undefeated 2007-2008 season in a close 2-1 victory.

Senior Lexy Nuno was the standout player of the game scoring both goals for the Acorns.

Nuno, 17, scored her first goal on a solo shot 10:42 into the first half, and her second goal came later in the period on an assist from senior captain Robin Nelson.

A Lynbrook player stole the ball from Nelson in Live Oak territory, but the midfielder quickly won it back and drove it deep toward the Lynbrook goal.

Nuno received the ball near the goal and shot it through the goalie’s legs for the score and the lead.

In field hockey terms, “she ripped it,” Nelson, 17, said.

Live Oak controlled the ball for much of the game keeping Lynbrook out of their striking circle, and sustained an offensive effort good enough to extend their Blossom Valley Athletic League record to 4-2.

“It was very evenly matched,” Nelson said. “Our goal was to defeat the undefeated, and we played up to their level and did just that.”

Communication was a key to victory for the Acorns, as they had to adjust from committing penalties.

Senior captain Holly Turray, 17, said the Acorns recycled the ball well, marked their opponents and moved the ball into scoring position.

“We had to play smart because we were getting called for obstruction a lot,” Turray said.
