competed three days last week in the Salinas pre-qualifier for the
state championships next weekend.
Salinas – The Pride 10 and under Green girl’s softball team competed three days last week in the Salinas pre-qualifier for the state championships next weekend
The team faced some stiff competition, but finished second with a 3-2 tournament record.
Manager Don Kientzy, and coaches Michelle Alvernaz and Stephanie Denton, both former college players, are elated with the girls progress.
Tournament results are as follows:
Pride 9, Scotts Valley Trouble 1
Pride dominated in game one led by the excellent pitching by Olivia Vukcevich and catching by Nicole Carson. Defensive plays in the infield by Hanna Doting and Madilyn Vukcevich also prevented Scotts Valley from scoring. Lorena Ukanwa had an RBI triple, and Lauren Putney and Carson also had RBIS.
Pride 0, Almaden Quicksilver 6Â
In game two Pride just couldn’t get their base runners in to score. Despite Pride’s excellent bunting, base stealing and sacrifice flies, the Quicksilver’s defense and consistent pitching proved unbeatable. Vukcevich Doting, Brooke Swan, and Erica Ramirez all had hits. Vukcevich had six strike-outs and Rachel Tomlinson had a solid defensive game at first base.
Santa Clara PAL 1, Pride 8
Outstanding hitting by Pride including huge hits from Tomlinson, Ramirez, Ukanwa, Doting, Putney, Vukcevich and Carson led them to their second tourney win. Ramirez took the mound and teamed with catcher Sabala for six strike-outs.
Pride 5, Santa Clara PAL 4
In both teams second meeting of the tournament Vukcevich threw an amazing game for Pride with nine strikeouts. In the bottom of the fourth inning, after a three-run home run by the PAL in the top of the inning, Pride’s Vukcevich started a two-out rally with a base hit, bringing more hits and RBI’s from Doting, Ramirez and Tomlinson, allowing Pride to take the lead 5-4. A key tag out by Sabala at the plate in the top of the fifth prevented the PAL from tying the game and secured the win for Pride.
Pride 1, Quicksilver 12
The Pride girls simply could not compete with the dominant hitting of the Quicksilver in the final game of the tournament. Despite many walks and solid bats from Tomlinson and Ukanwa, Pride was only able to score one run on a ground out RBI by Doting.
