Behind the Troops
“I want to send care packages to our military troops overseas to help support the effort. Who do I contact to do this or what address can I use to be sure the soldiers get these items? I also don’t believe flying a flag that states ‘Support Our Troops’ is an effective way to do our part.”
RED PHONE
Caller, we appreciate your desire to help our military personnel. Many residents are stepping up in this effort, including local Boy Scouts who reach out to the men and women serving overseas as part of their Eagle Scout projects. They have collected many wonderful items to be sent to our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Operation Interdependence, which has appeared in our calendar section many times, is a highly-organized group of concerned people dedicated to supplying civilian rations to our troops without disrupting military operations. You can register to help as a coordinator to ensure each package meets standards set by O.I., you can take responsibility of the entire contents, you could choose to supply items for other coordinators, or donate funds to help support the program. Speeders on Calle Enrique
“I am calling regarding speeding cars on Calle Enrique. Drivers use our street to get to Watsonville Road while avoiding the stop lights and stop signs on other streets and care nothing about the speed limit. Children walk to school and play on Calle Enrique and this is quickly becoming a dangerous situation. Who do we contact or how do we go about getting speed bumps installed on this street? Most residents here would be in favor of this. Thank you.”
RED PHONE
Morgan Hill’s Public Works Director Jim Ashcraft advised the Red Phone that the best way to start this project would be to visit the city’s Web site at www.morgan-hill.ca.gov/html/gov/pw/traffic.asp. On this site you will find a section entitled “Neighborhood Traffic Management Tool Kit.” The kit addresses a variety of different measures available to slow traffic down in your area.
Starting a petition for the installation of speed bumps involving concerned neighbors is a good idea, according to Ashcraft, and this process is explained on the Web site.
