Sign slips through spellchecker

Hi Mr. Red Phone. My fiance and I recently moved into Morgan Hill. We live in the Montelena complex. Its one of the newer complexes in Morgan Hill. We love the place. We love the area. The train is a little loud. But that is a different story. We have noted the street is spelled S-A-F-R-O-N, while it should be spelled S-A-F-F-R-O-N. It is obviously spelled incorrectly. It doesn’t help that we are both school teachers. It just irks us a little bit every time we have to drive on it to see it misspelled. Is there any way you could get a hold of the Morgan Hill sign people and have them change it to the correct spelling?

RED PHONE

In order to prevent you from breaking out your trusty red pens and attempting to manually make the change to the sign to match the spelling of the world’s most expensive spice and risk a vandalism ticket, the Red Phone did a little research.

Since you live in the smelly section of Morgan Hill’s “spice alley” surrounded by streets with clever names like Tarragon Avenue, Curry Avenue and Basil Court, you know that it wasn’t named for Morgan Hill’s founder Hiram Morgan Hill Safron.

Two of the signs on other intersection along the street are spelled correctly, but the third on the northern portion of the street, where additional homes are being started, is spelled incorrectly. The area is being developed by long-time Morgan Hill resident Rocke Garcia. He said he wasn’t sure how it happened but promised to have it fixed.

“It is obvious that it wasn’t spelled correctly,” Garcia said. “There is no question that we will fix it, and we apologize for the misspelling.”

Anyone who notices any trouble with signs can call the Public Works Department at 776-7337 or fill out the form at www.morgan-hill.ca.gov /html/gov/dept/pubwk.asp.

So Good We

Printed it Twice

“I read the Click and Clack car articles. It seems like every couple weeks you run the same article a couple weeks in a row. It is a good article and fun to read, but not two times in a row. Just wondering why you can’t get a new one each week.”

RED PHONE

We can, and do, get fresh articles for our Automotive section each week – we’re not trying to pull a fast one on you. The responsible parties have been notified of the error and severely reprimanded by an angry Red Phone.

Revitalization key:

Add more parking, get rid of bicyclers

I just read Matt King’s article about the downtown revitalization. How is real revitalization going to occur when Morgan Hill took parking spots years ago on each corner out and made it so people can’t drive down there and park and go to any of the shops. There is very limited parking. Unless you live down there, where are you going to park if you come from out of town? They will go to shopping centers where they have easy access to shops and parking. Rip out those corners and put those old parking spots back so people can go down there to shop. The way it is now, it will never work. The bumps are supposed to be bicycle-friendly. What are the bicyclers going to do? They just go right through town and don’t stop. Get rid of the bikes.

RED PHONE

Yet another opinion how to “fix” downtown.

Street Light Update

Morgan Deputy Director of Public Works Mori Struve dialed up the Crimson Crusader this week to report the city has taken steps to solve the Mushroom City’s darkened roads by repairing several street lights. Last week, Red Phone callers reported lights were out on Walnut Grove and Church Street. Struve said eight lights are scheduled for repair on Walnut Grove, but the city couldn’t find any broken lights on Church Street.

“We checked them and they’re all on,” Struve said.
