MORGAN HILL
Kudos to the student athletes who contributed heartily to Sobrato and Live Oak high schools’ successful sports seasons this fall.
It was a busy semester, and several athletes jumped at the chance to standout in Central Coast Section high school sports.
Both schools’ football teams managed to clinch spots in the Medium School Division Central Coast Section playoffs with the Bulldogs winning the West Valley Division.
The Sobrato and Live Oak football teams ran into each other for the first time in history in the first round of the CCS playoffs with Live Oak coming out on top with a 22-7 victory at Richert Field.
The Nov. 16 routing was the Acorns’ first CCS win in eight seasons as they beat the Saratoga High School Falcons in the semi-final round and finally lost in the division finals to Archbishop Riordan.
The Live Oak offense was led by All-League, first-team junior quarterback Jeff Roberts, who ran for 11 touchdowns while throwing for three and completing 33 of 61 passes for a total of 553 yards on the season.
That was all before injuring his right ankle against Sobrato in the first round CCS game.
The Acorns were also led in rushing by All-League, first team senior running back Steven Rodriguez who ran 867 total yards with nine touchdowns.
Other notable mentions are senior wide receivers Tim O’Rourke who led the Acorns with 269 receiving yards on 18 receptions and two touchdowns and Kyle Hennings who had three touchdowns with 157 receiving yards.
Hennings was voted most outstanding defensive back in the Mount Hamilton Division and won All-League, second-team honors.
Senior Matt Acosta won an All-League, first team mention at offensive line as well as senior Derek Campagna, who was voted first-team defense at linebacker.
The Bulldogs were led by All-League, first-team junior running back Anthony Zizzo, who ran 932 yards on 125 carries for the season with a season-high 172 yards against Overfelt High School.
Zizzo also led the Sobrato offense with 10 touchdowns on the season.
Other Sobrato All-League, first-team students include most outstanding student athlete, Jo Jo Anaya as wide receiver and most outstanding sophomore, Joel Rueda for nose guard.
Seniors Kyle Butcher, Steven Gutierrez, Victor Gillespie, Cody Vivian and juniors Alex Meldrum all nabbed All-League, first-team honors for the Bulldogs.
Junior quarterback Erick Levell threw for 903 yards and 10 touchdowns while completing 77 passes from 133 attempts.
Sobrato senior Nicole Simoneau was voted league MVP in the Santa Teresa volleyball division while Laura Billos was voted junior of the year.
Other first-team notables for Sobrato are senior Cheyenne Hambey and junior Lisa Shroeder.
Live Oak’s Gabriela Cinkova was voted Freshman of the Year in the Mount Hamilton Division.
Junior Lance Wolfsmith ran his way to a first-team award for Sobrato in boys cross country.
“Go Nuts” seemed to be the slogan for the Live Oak’s boys and girls water polo teams as they finished strong this fall with CCS appearances from both teams.
The girls team won the Blossom Valley Athletic League last month with a 3-2 upset over Leland.
The lady Acorns were led this season by Sarah D’Angelo, Alisa Pinabarsi and goalie Shelby Carillo.
The Live Oak boys water polo team managed to get to the BVAL finals but were defeated in the game’s remaining seconds to Leland 10-9.
Mack Haines, Live Oak’s boys water polo coach, was named the BVAL Coach of the Year.
And not to leave tennis out – Sobrato’s girls tennis team took the BVAL championship this fall with a 10-2 overall record.
Freshman Alexa Watanabe and Alie Pecsok led the way for the Bulldogs’ successful season.
Congratulations again to the Sobrato and Live Oak athletes who gave it their all this season in their respective sport and were rewarded with league honors.
