The clouds parted and the sun came out just in time Tuesday afternoon for the Sobrato girls soccer team to rout Lincoln High School 4-1 at a damp and muddy Outdoor Sports Center.
Sobrato freshman forward Jennae Cambra scored three goals in the game’s second half.
The Sobrato offense dominated the first half of the game, producing 10 shots on goal.
Sobrato senior forward Ashley Grose received pass from mid-field and dribble daround the Lincoln defender.
Grose took a shot from 10 feet out that bounced off the left post and rolled right back to her.
She shot right back in the net to give Sobrato an early 1-0 lead.
Sobrato senior goalie Katrina Olsen was perfect in the first half, blocking all eight shots that were kicked at her.
“We played really well,” Olsen said after the game. “We passed well and we played well with each other. Our forwards played outside so we can get the ball into the middle. Those two goals at the end helped.”
The Bulldogs continued to pressure the Lincoln defense in the second half.
Cambra received a long and high pass from mid-field and was able to split through the Lincoln defense and sail the ball over the goalie’s head to give Sobrato a 2-0 lead and give Cambra her first goal.
Shortly after, Lincoln capitalized on a penalty deep down in Bulldog territory with a free kick from 20 yards out.
It would be the last time that Lincoln would score as the Bulldogs dominated the rest of the game.
Cambra scored two more goals in the last 10 minutes, her last one as she dribbled right up to the Lincoln goalie and spun a kick off her foot that bounced out of the goalie’s reach.
Cambra said it was the team’s dominating offense that kept the Bulldogs in the game.
“We played good,” said Cambra. “We played more agressive and we worked the middle more.”
Other notable performances were junior midfielder Melina Silva, who had a goal annulled due to an offsides call and freshmen midfielder Janelle Cisneros, who made a few key passes and deterred some Lincoln forwards when they posed a threat.
Tuesday’s victory improves Sobrato’s season record to 4-1.
They hosted Silver Creek High School at 3:15pm Thursday afternoon at the Outdoor Sports Center.
Sobrato coach Gina Kiser was pleased with her team’s effort and plans to keep the faith strong with her squad.
“They never gave up,” said Kiser. “They never got down on themselves and they stayed focus. That’s the only way you’re going to win the game. Now we need to stay hungry and keep winning.”
