Morgan Hill – The Sobrato boys soccer team remains undefeated in Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division play after tying Silver Creek 0-0 Thursday and beating San Jose 3-0 Saturday.
The Bulldogs improve to 2-0-1 in league play, 5-2-2 overall.
Coach Ricardo Martinez said his team played well in both games, but were able to execute better in the San Jose game.
“We dominated the game, but we just weren’t able to finish,” Martinez said in reference to the game against Silver Creek.
Martinez said his team had some nice looks and made Silver Creek’s goalie work, but were unable to punch the ball into the net.
“Most of our shots were on frame,” Martinez said. “The keeper had some good saves; we were just unable to put the ball in.”
The boys continued to play much in the same manner against San Jose, Martinez said, attacking the goal early, but unable to produce any points until the second half.
“We had five or six good opportunities,” Martinez said. “We had some that went high and a couple that hit the cross bar.”
The Bulldogs scored their first goal in the second half on a Shibin Tharayil penalty kick in the 13th minute of the half.
The play was set up on a pass from Arturo Ceja to Mario Vargas where Vargas was able to beat the defenders, but was tripped.
Sobrato followed up 10 minutes later on a goal by Murilo Almeida who was fed by Ceja and was able to get past the defense for the goal.
The final goal was scored by Victor Iracheta off an assist from Almeida.
Iracheta was able to beat three defenders and stay on sides before sending the ball over the goalie and into the back of the net.
“Murilo played the ball from midfield to left to Victor, getting it over three defenders,” Martinez said. “The defense pushed up to get (Iracheta) off sides, but we had already gotten the pass through. The goalie came out and Victor lobbed it over his head.”
Martinez said he has been especially pleased with his defense since league play has started, not allowing a single goal in three contests.
“The defense has done a really good job,” Martinez said. “Trevor (Newcomb) has done a great job in goal. … (The defense) has done a good job in communicating with one another.”
The Bulldogs will be on break the next two weeks, returning to the field Jan. 2 when they take on Evergreen Valley on the road.
