Santa Cruz meet
Finishing up the year in Santa Cruz Dec. 8-9, the Morgan Hill Makos swim team competed with more than 800 athletes from more than 50 Swim Teams in Pacific Swimming.
Hosted by the Cabrillo Threshers swim team, the competitive field was fast and deep.
“Heading into the Olympics this summer, swimming is getting so competitive even getting into meets is on a tight deadline, and most Makos – and many, many swimmers in the Zone – did not sign up early enough,” Makos coach Mark Scott said.
Those that did, however, enjoyed a sunny winter weekend in the pool atop the hill at UC Santa Cruz.
Scoring well for the Makos in the A Division was Karen McElheney, who took seventh place in the 100-yard freestyle, third in the 500 freestyle, and second in the 400 individual medley.
Lauren Akin scored well in the B Division, earning a new A time in the 100-yard butterfly, and a Junior Olympic qualifying time in the 100 back stroke.
Christiana Bridges, just coming off the Junior Olympics, dropped a little more than seven seconds in the 500 freestyle, scoring sixth in that event, and earning a new AA time.
