The Live Oak boys soccer team was defeated 3-0 Wednesday afternoon by Leigh High School.
The Longhorns controlled most of the game’s tempo with strong offense and crisp passes.
They got an early 1-0 lead when sophomore Steven Shirokari took a hard shot that went through the goalkeeper’s hands.
Leigh scored again when junior forward Eric Piedad sailed the ball into the Live Oak net from 30 yards out.
The Acorns failed to connect their passes and managed to take only one shot in the first half.
The Longhorn offense seemed too fast and strong for their defense.
Junior forward Sean Keafer sealed the game shut for Leigh when he received a pass from the corner of the field and kicked a line drive past the goalkeeper’s reach.
Leigh was able to shut down freshman standout Andy Larson, who couldn’t take any shots due to strong defensive pressure.
Live Oak’s coach Tony Goble saw much need for improvement in his team Wednesday afternoon.
“We aren’t connecting passes and getting the ball to our outlests,” said Goble in a team halftime huddle. “If we can’t make simple 15-yard passes, it won’t work. I thought we could escape with that first goal but we didn’t.”
Wednesday’s loss puts Live Oak’s overall league record at 2-5-1.
They will host Mt. Pleasant High School at 3:15pm Friday.
Sobrato vs. Willow Glen
The Willow Glen rams handed Sobrato their first league loss of the season Wednesday afternoon with a 3-2 victory at the Outdoor Sports Center.
The Bulldogs put hard pressure on the Rams in the remaining minutes of the game but couldn’t put a shot in goal.
They drew first blood in the first half with a goal from Cesar Arellano.
Arellano took a long pass from midfield and bounced the ball off his chest while in mid-air.
Arellano said that his team’s effort was great but they ran out of steam at the end of the game.
“The intensity was there,” Arellano said. “Guys started slowing down, I started to get tired. We need to work on our communication.”
Sobrato’s second goal came in the second half from senior captain Victor Iricheta.
He scored on a centered pass from the corner.
Other notable performances were from goalkeeper Eugene Richardson and senior midfielder Jason Racz who made a few promising passes in the remaining seconds of the game.
Sobrato’s coach Ricardo Martinez was disappointed with Wednesday’s loss but told his team put the loss behind them.
“A couple let-downs in the back costed us a few goals,” said Martinez. “Our next goal is to win our next game. That is our main focus.”
The loss moves the Bulldog’s league record to 2-1-1.
They will travel to Evergreen High School Friday at 3:15pm to take on the Cougars in another league match.
