Two local bands in finals
– Rock stars may be in our midst as two Morgan Hill-based bands made it to the 9Lives Battle of the Bands competition Saturday. Bands “Just Chill” and “The Epidemik” will compete Saturday for a $500 cash prize, musical equipment and recording time at Studio 222 located in Gilroy. Six bands competed in the semi-finals with the top three moving along to this Saturday’s competition. San Jose-based band “Cadent” will be in third band in the running for the grand prize.
The finals take place Saturday at 9 Lives, 7430 Monterey St., Gilroy. Doors open at 8 p.m.; for ticket information visit www.ninelivesclub.com.
Visit with police
– The Morgan Hill Police Department and the Community Law Enforcement Foundation invite the community to attend the Annual Public Safety Day & Open House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Sept. 17 at the Morgan Hill police station, 16200 Vineyard Blvd.
The event provides residents with an opportunity to get to know their public safety representatives and see up close the tools they use to preserve, protect and defend the community. They will also be incorporating an eWaste Fundraiser into this year’s event to help raise funds to buy equipment for the Morgan Hill Police Department.
The event includes tours of the department, SWAT trucks and other MHPD vehicles on display, a demonstration with K-9 with Pax and officer David Ray, a free child seat check, food, games and prizes.
Meet the author
– Come meet Luke Marusiak, author of “Marx & Ford,” a tale that follows the lives of twins John and Thomas Staid who are similar in every way, until they grow distant in their beliefs and the paths they take. This fiction will fill the readers’ minds with opposing ideas and intellectual debate as the twins each grapple with the consequences of their choices. Marusiak was raised in Pennsylvania, served in the U.S. Army, then moved to Silicon Valley in the early 1990s. He will share his writing experiences and talk about his novel from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, at BookSmart, 80 E. Second St.

Catch a free outdoor movie
– The Morgan Hill Downtown Association is presenting its annual free Downtown Movie Night Saturday, at the Community & Cultural Center, with the showing of “Grease.” Enjoy a free movie under the stars. Dress in your best ’50s attire. There will be free ice cream and pony rides.
South Valley Democrats raise funds
– Don’t miss the South County Democratic Club Annual Fundraiser featuring keynote speaker Professor Terry Christensen, San Jose State University Political Science Department, from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday Sept. 17 at the home of Ralph and Susan McKuhen, 3225 Dryden Ave., Gilroy. Invited elected officials include Congressman Jerry McNerney, Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, Assemblyman Luis Alejo, and Assemblyman Bill Monning.

Republicans, others meet
– Conservative Republicans and concerned citizens are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the Gilroy/Morgan Hill California Republican Assembly at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at 12415 Murphy Ave., San Martin (west of the airport). The objective of our local CRA chapter is to raise political sophistication and keep abreast of politics in the state and the country.
Taste of Morgan Hill is coming
– Attracting people from throughout Northern California, the Taste of Morgan Hill will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 24 and 25, in downtown Morgan Hill. Festivities are designed around the entire family. Taste delectable foods from many Morgan Hill restaurants as well as from the unique food booths throughout the festival. Drink vintage wines from local wineries and enjoy a variety of micro-brewed and domestic beers. For shopping enthusiasts, stroll through more than 150 fine arts and craft booths and local downtown businesses.

Visit the expanded ‘Kids Zone’ featuring hands-on demonstrations, rides, a petting zoo and ‘make your own crafts’ booths and returning as always, bigger and better than ever is the Custom and Classic Car show, featuring a multitude of classic Mustangs, And, also included is the ‘Quilt Show’ at the Morgan Hill Community & Cultural Center.
