Fa Saulala carried defending champ Live Oak to 2-0 in Mount Hamilton Division volleyball Thursday, collecting 15 kills and 19 digs in a hard-earned sweep of visiting Silver Creek, 25-23, 25-20, 29-27.

“I don’t think Fa got dug once,” LOHS coach James Uthes said. “I told my setters, let’s just set it to Fa and let her finish it, and she did every time.”

Savanna Hartman added six kills and six digs, and Katie Obbema had five kills, five digs, two aces and a block for the Acorns (3-2, 2-0), who also received 53 digs from Alli Unger.

Silver Creek (4-9, 0-3), the 2010 Santa Teresa Division champion, pushed Live Oak to the limit each game. The Raiders appeared to had won Game 3 at 25-23 — but an official penalized them two points for using a player who was not on their roster.

With the score reset at 23-all, the Acorns had just enough to score six of the final eight points to clinch.

“Both teams fought really hard,” Uthes said. “But I think we just had more power up front than they did with Savanna and Fa and our two middles (Obbema and Allison Shedden). I’m really proud of the girls for finishing like they did.”

Live Oak plays at Leigh at 6:30 p.m. today.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Saturday Unger was honored along with several other Sacramento/Bay Area high school seniors for receiving scholarship awards offered through the Positive Coaching Alliance Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program for exemplary character in sports and beyond.

Other local recipients included Live Oak’s Ben Hartl (football, soccer) and Nathaniel Batey (water polo, swimming).

  • Sobrato continued Santa Teresa Division play in sweeping fashion as well Thursday, beating Del Mar 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 behind seven kills by Jessica Westall and four by Casey Hendricks.

Rebekah Inouye, Jessica Anderson and Kelsey Hernandez added three kills apiece for the Bulldogs (5-5, 1-1), and Melissa Nepomuceno and Miranda Werts had two.

“Our focus was to apply pressure by forcing Del Mar to make mistakes,” SHS coach Jason Medenceles said in an email. “How we achieved this was to limit our free balls, serves and finding the court on our attacks.”

Sobrato finished 1-3 Saturday at the Los Gatos Tournament, with a win against Pacific Grove and losses to Los Gatos, Notre Dame-Belmont and King City.

“We started every single game slow and never got into a groove until the afternoon,” Medenceles said. “We had a tough pool with (Los Gatos) and Belmont. Both these teams were stacked with players and possessed a different caliber of skill.

“We ended the day more positive than before, and (I) feel like my team is motivated to find succession for our program.”

Sobrato continues league play at 6:30 p.m. today at Santa Teresa.
