The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team announced today it is now offering a limited number of the “life-saving” EmSeeQ, a cellular-based wearable locator bracelet.
The item will be free to the public and aid in the speedy recovery of at-risk individuals who are prone to wandering and becoming lost due to Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and autism as a part of a community-oriented policing partnership with county residents, according to a press release.
Beginning immediately, the free EmSeeQ bracelets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to those with a diagnosed cognitive disorder living anywhere in Santa Clara County.
Individual families who receive the devices are responsible for registering the device and paying a $25 fee per month for location services. For those who do not receive a free device, the Sheriff’s office recommends EmSeeQ devices for purchase as a tool to help in the search and rescue of vulnerable citizens who are prone to becoming lost and may be unable to identify themselves or ask for help.
If an individual wearing the device is missing or has wandered off, the caregiver can place a 911 call to report the circumstance, then contact EmFinders to activate the EmSeeQ device.
The device then places a 911 call, providing 911 dispatchers with the missing person’s location. According to the SCC Sheriff’s office the system can typically locate the device wearer in less than 30 minutes.
Since EmSeeQ uses cellular technology, the system can track an individual’s movements anywhere in the United States, according to the press release.
Area residents interested in finding out more about the program should contact Jim Cole or Scott McQueen at 450-3100 or sccssar.org
