Salazar homers, drives in four runs in 11-3 upset of Pioneer
SAN JOSE — Live Oak snapped a five-game losing streak in a big way Tuesday at Pioneer, breaking a 3-3 tie with eight runs in the seventh inning to beat the first place team in the Mount Hamilton Division, 11-3.
Sophomore Jalen Salazar homered, doubled twice and drove in four runs, and Jakob Conlan had three RBIs, two doubles and pitched a complete game for Live Oak.
Cody Van Aken added two RBIs and doubled for the Acorns (5-7, 2-6), who won for the first time since March 4 and got their offense clicking to the tune of 10 hits. They remained tied with Branham for seventh place, five games behind front-runner Willow Glen.
Pioneer (7-3, 6-2) fell a game back in second.
Conlan (2-2) struck out four and gave up two earned runs in eight hits and two walks in his first complete game this season. The junior lowered his ERA to 3.55.
Westmont 13, Sobrato 6
The Bulldogs continued to cool off in Mount Hamilton Division play Tuesday, dropping a third straight
game in which they committed four errors.
The Warriors (6-4, 4-4) collected 13 hits against three Sobrato pitchers and scored seven runs in the fourth inning after the Bulldogs tied it 6-6 with four runs in the top half.
Tim Giles was two for three with a triple and three RBIs, and Ryan Webb and Aaron Wallace drove in runs for Sobrato (4-4, 3-4), which dropped to fifth in the league.
SOFTBALL
LOHS 10, Piedmont Hills 5
Kayla Cisneroz had two RBIs, scored three runs and collected three of Live Oak’s 11 hits as the Acorns slugged their way to a second straight victory in Mount Hamilton Division play.
Live Oak (2-1 league) broke away with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Oak Grove 6, SHS 4
The Bulldogs had a 10-6 edge in hits but came up short of achieving their best start in Santa Teresa Division play.
Nicole Larson doubled twice, singled twice and scored two runs for Sobrato (2-1).
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Sobrato’s unbeaten streak of 15 games and six matches ended Monday with a three-set loss at Sacred Heart Prep.
Tuesday the Bulldogs rallied from a two-games-to-none deficit only to suffer their first loss, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-9, 10-15, in Santa Teresa Division play against Pioneer.
Drew Mammen and Estevan Santiago had 10 kills and 16 assists to lead Sobrato (2-1 league).
SWIMMING
Michelle Mikaelsson met Central Coast Section-qualifying times in three first place swims Tuesday to help the Live Oak girls edge Leigh 93-90 in a Mount Hamilton Division double dual meet at Live Oak High School.
The Lady Acorns lost 118-66 to Santa Teresa but continued to improve behind Mikaelsson, who won the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.42) and 100 breastroke (1:10.73).
The junior also won the 200 freestyle relay (1:46.26) with Rachel Cretcher, Eunice Kim and Marissa Sendejas. Cretcher touched first in the 200 free (2:04.84) as well.
Daniel Pawlak won the 50 free (23.27) and swam in the winning 200 free relay (1:35.41) with Danny Robinson, Daniel Enriquez and Ryan McCombs for the Acorns, who lost narrowly to both opponents.
TRACK AND FIELD
Athletes from Live Oak and Sobrato will compete in two showcase meets Saturday.
The Acorns are sending their elite relay teams to the St. Francis Invitational, while the Bulldogs take part in the 41st annual Avis-Kelley Invitational at Gilroy’s Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.
BADMINTON
Sobrato moved to 4-1 in league play Tuesday with an 8-7 win over San Jose.
Anthony Langga and Ashley Tharayil won in the top singles matches for the Bulldogs, who had doubles wins by Sagir Kadiwala and Quang Tran, Harsimran Gill and Caitlin Colladay, and Marcus Pereira and Megan Langga.
