MHAT open house tonight
– Got a video from a hike? What about Grandma’s 100th birthday? Ever dreamed of starting your own talk show? Morgan Hill Access TV will assist any resident with this dream and even provide all the needed equipment, including a studio to shoot in, free of charge.

Award-winning poet at Gav
– Internationally acclaimed poet Jamaal May will present his award-winning work at a free public reading from 1 to 2 p.m. today, at Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. He will also lead a special three-hour writing workshop from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, for the first 20 students who call (408) 848-4889.Â
Republicans, others meet
– Conservative Republicans and concerned citizens are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the Gilroy/Morgan Hill California Republican Assembly at 7 p.m. Thursday. Meet at 12415 Murphy Ave., San Martin (west of the airport). The objective of the local CRA chapter is to raise political sophistication and keep abreast of politics in the state and our country.
Enjoy ‘No Bull BBQ’
– The second Annual No Bull BBQ Cookoff with more than 70 entries from across the country, takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center. The competition is the largest on the West Coast. Contestants will battle for $13,000 in cash prizes as well as the People’s Choice Award.
The competition is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society and includes five categories this year. Winners can go on to the National Rancher’s Reserve Beef Cup, Kingsford Charcoal Points Chase or the KCBS championships. There will be live music from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Kick-off and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday during the competition, along with great food and the chance to sample the best from the competitors and vote to choose the People’s Choice. Attendance is free.
Rotary fashion show slated
– The Dazzle Fashion Show and Luncheon will be held beginning at 11:30 a.m. Friday May 13, at Clos LaChance Winery, 1 Hummingbird Lane, San Martin. The event benefits community programs sponsored by Rotary Club of Morgan Hill.

Wine, food benefits FFA
– The Morgan Hill Ag Booster Foundation 2011 Spring Auction raises money for the Live Oak and Sobrato Future Farmer of America programs. This year’s event takes place at 4 p.m. Saturday, at Guglielmo Winery, 1480 E. Main St. There will be wine, food and a live and silent auction. Tickets are available now or at the gate, and includes wine, food and a donation drawing.

Wine stroll coming
– The first Wine Stroll of the year is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $25 each. See www.morganhilldowntown.org for a list of participating businesses and wineries, then get tickets at those businesses. The event usually sells out and tickets are limited.
Recycle and help Japan
– Bring old and unused electronics and ewaste to the Morgan Hill Buddhist Community Center, 16450 Murphy Ave., between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and help those in Japan following last month’s earthquake and tsunami. For those who cannot make this date, donations by check are welcome and can be made out to either “Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund” or to “Hongwangi Earthquake Relief Fund” and sent to Dr. Jon Hatakeyama, 370 W. Dunne Ave. Ste. #3 Morgan Hill.

Flower lovers meet
– The Morgan Hill flower Lovers club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road.
Drive less challenge
– Help play a role in protecting the climate, especially when it comes to reducing car travel, a major source of carbon emissions in South County. The Drive Less Challenge is a fun way to start by leaving your car behind to walk, bike, bus, train or carpool and share activities with friends, neighbors, co-workers and others.

Make Mother’s Day cards
– In honor of Mother’s Day, children can create a handmade card and handmade soap for mom from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday May 7, at BookSmart, 80 E. Second St. There is a $5 fee. Please RSVP (408) 778-6467 to ensure space and supplies. Parent participation is required for children 5 years and younger. Parents of older children are asked to stay in the store during the workshop.
Leave your mark
– Thursday May 12 is National Doodle Day and BookSmart invites the public to “leave your mark” on a giant poster in the store from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. They will provide the markers, pencils, and crayons. Every doodler gets a free ice cream cone! BookSmart is located at 80 E. Second St.
Help make the city beautiful
– Help Morgan Hill become even more beautiful by trimming shrubs, planting flowers, picking up litter and painting, from 9 a.m. to noon May 21. Meet at City Hall, 17575 Peak Ave. This event will conclude with a celebratory barbecue lunch!

– Applications for the 2011 4th of July Parade are now available. This year’s Official Parade Theme is “An Old-Fashioned 4th of July.” If you don’t receive a parade application in the mail, you can pick one up at BookSmart, 80 E. Second St., Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce, at www.mhfreedomfest.com, or email a request to pa****@****ic.com.
Get entry in by May 4 and take advantage of the “early bird” entry fee. The last date parade entries will be accepted is June 4.
MMG needs volunteers
– Live Oak High School is asking for parents to volunteer at this year’s Mushroom Mardi Gras May 28 and 29 to turn volunteer hours into cash for LOHS.
Mushroom Mardi Gras has created opportunities to help raise funds and LOHS doesn’t want its community to miss out.
