Live Oak ends its first boys tennis season in the Santa Teresa Division today having already clinched third place outright.

The Acorns took care of that Friday with a 5-2 victory over Branham and will host Pioneer at 3:15 p.m. today.

Live Oak’s top single Derek Johnson lost for only the third time this year against Branham, falling 6-0, 6-2 to undefeated Val Spokeny, who will be favored in next month’s Santa Teresa Division Singles/Doubles Tournament.

The Acorns rebounded with wins in straight sets by Dylan Johnson, Bryan Freitas and freshman Tanner Hallinan.

Bryant Gamboa and Dane Cleeton won by default in top doubles, and Ben Hopwood and Ian Karin earned their first victory — 6-4, 6-2 — in the No. 3 doubles match.

The division tournament begins May 3 at Mount Pleasant High School, with the semifinals and championship matches following May 5. The top finishers advance to the Blossom Valley Athletic League Singles/Doubles Tournament, a qualifier for sectionals.

The Johnson brothers will team up as Live Oak’s top doubles team at Santa Teresa finals. Hallinan and Cleeton will occupy in the No. 2 spot, and Freitas and Gamboa will play singles.
