Estevan Santiago, a senior at Ann Sobrato High School, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Santa Clara County Employees Management Association.

He was selected after his essay about how college will help him pursue his career goals and public service goals was reviewed by the CEMA committee.

Santiago was one of seven Bay Area teens awarded the scholarship and the only Morgan Hill student.

“The scholarship committee was extremely impressed with the essays we received, which put us in the unenviable position of having to select seven finalists from an overwhelmingly strong pool of applicants,” said D’Mitra Alvarez Murphy, chair of CEMA’s High School Senior University Scholarship Committee.

The High School Senior University Scholarship is open to children of CEMA/Operating Engineers No. 3 members. Qualifying students must be currently in their senior year of high school and/or enrolled in an accredited college or university.

This year’s applicants were asked to submit a personal statement explaining why they planned to attend college, an outline of their educational and career goals, a resume, and an essay identifying their favorite union activist.

Recipients of the 2011 CEMA High School Senior University Scholarship are:

Cameron Wilson Colley, Palo Alto – Henry M. Gunn High School

Nicole Bejar, San Jose – Presentation High School

Estevan Santiago, Morgan Hill – Ann Sobrato High School

Rachel Schoenbrun, San Mateo – Tufts University

Neha Palacherla, San Jose – University of California, Davis

Jonathan Roberts, San Jose – University of California, Merced

Nicholas Oberhelman, San Jose – Leland High School

CEMA has been awarding Bay Area seniors with the High School Seniors University Scholarship award since 1994. Students received their scholarship checks at a ceremony luncheon Monday with CEMA’s executive board.
