Sobrato fires in two late goals to win big in BVAL opener
The Sobrato boys soccer team scored two goals in injury time against Gunderson to cap a 5-0 win Thursday to open Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division play.
“I’m really excited to start league with a win,” said coach Ricardo Martinez. “Last year and the year before, we were not able to.”
With the win, Sobrato improves to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.
“They guys are really connecting and playing well as a team,” Martinez said.
The Bulldogs scored in the first half from Murilo Almeida on a cross. He was fed by Mario Vargas and scored after beating out several defenders.
The offense remained quiet for the remainder of the half, then came to life in the second, adding four goals.
Almeida opened the scoring when he got a pass from Chris Montoya that he was able to use to get behind the defense.
Vargas added his second assist on the day for the third goal of the game when he found Chrystofer Garcia open.
“Mario played forward and Garcia took a shot that found the net,” Martinez said.
The game remained 3-0 through the rest of the game until the final minute of extended injury time where the Bulldogs found the net two more times to extend the lead to the final margin of victory.
Chris Sergent attacked first when he stole the ball as was able to dribble it past the defenders until he had a one-on-one situation with the goalie.
Sergent added the final goal a short time later off a feed from Vargas.
Martinez said that initially the shot was blocked by the goalie, but the ball came back to Sergent who was able to knock it in.
The Bulldogs will next take on San Jose High Academy on Tuesday in San Jose.
