THE HISPANIC FOUNDATION OF SILICON VALLEY (HFSV) has announced the opening of its 2006 scholarship program that assists Latinas in higher education who are taking a non-traditional path to achieving a college degree.
Funding for the scholarships was made possible through the Hispanic Women’s Council of Northern California, which donated more than $18,000 to establish the Silicon Valley Latina Scholarship Fund with the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley in 2004.
“We are excited to know that our funds are still making an impact in the community,” said Marielena Scanlon, former treasurer of the Hispanic Women’s Council of Northern California and current board member of the HFSV. “The Hispanic Women’s Council believed in the power of philanthropy and the track record of the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley to effectively distribute our funds to worthy recipients.”
Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to three Latinas attending, entering, or re-entering a community college or four-year college or university in Santa Clara County and meeting at least one of the following eligibility requirements:
- Had children prior to or while attending college.
-
Is pursuing teaching credentials.
-
Is over 30 years of age.
-
Has been previously enrolled in higher education and has returned or is attempting to return after having taken three or more years off from school.
“Education has always been a major commitment of the foundation,” said Teresa Alvarado, HFSV executive director. “It is critical that we support Hispanic women who want to achieve their educational goals but have significant challenges in doing so.”
Applications are due Feb. 16, 2007. For more information visit www.hfsv.org to download a copy of the application.
