The winner of the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association’s poster contest is no stranger to success.

A creation dreamed up by local artist JoAnne Perez Robinson, who also won first place in 2006 and nabbed a close second place in 2008 and 2010, was selected as the festival’s official art poster for 2011.

Robinson will receive a $750 cash prize. “I really liked the vibrant colors,” said Janet Krulee, Gilroy Garlic Festival Association retail chairwoman. “I thought it gave a really good representation of Gilroy and our countryside. I think it will make a great piece of art for anybody.”

Chris Filice, Gilroy Garlic Festival Association administrative support manager, said out of the 11 posters entered, about 75 percent were from Gilroy.

“To me it resembles what Gilroy is,” she said of Robinson’s work. “To me it looks like driving down Hecker Pass.”

Robinson said she entered a poster in the contest roughly 25 years ago, “then went on with my life,” laughed the artist who has lived in Gilroy for 32 years and enjoys painting natural landscapes, people, animals and “just about everything” else.

Her next entry wasn’t until 2005.

She switches back and forth between watercolor and acrylic because, “like playing a different instrument, it keeps you on your toes.”

Robinson said she plans to use her $750 in winnings on her booth, which will be set up at the Garlic Festival and showcase her works for sale.

The coming months will be busy for the contest winner, who will be showing her creations at several big events:

  • Robinson will have a booth From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday at one of the homes featured in the Gilroy Assistance League’s Impressions Home and Garden Tour. For more information on the garden tour, click here.
