Talk with others dealing with addiction
– Addiction is a family illness and doesn’t just affect the person taking drugs. Family members and friends also suffer. Do you feel like you are always holding your breath? Are you scared every time the door opens in your home? Do you wonder whether your spouse, parent or friend will be mean, violent, withdrawn, or incoherent when you see them next? Do you spend so much time and energy covering up for the addict that you have nothing left for yourself? Are your finances depleted because of legal problems or is money just “disappearing” from your account?
If someone’s addiction is suffocating you, help yourself first. There is a group of people who are affected by someone’s drug use meeting every week to share experiences and offer hope and strength. These meetings are a support group based on the 12 steps of Nar-Anon Family Groups. There are no dues or fees to join. The group meets at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at the First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave., room 202, in Gilroy. A similar group for ages 12 to 19 meets at 7:30 pm the first Thursday of each month in room 201 of the church.
