A now 50-acre brush fire has been burning in northeast Morgan Hill since about 4:30 p.m., though fire department personnel at the scene say it’s 30 percent contained.

More than 100 firefighters are at the fire near Main Avenue and Liberata Drive in northeast Morgan Hill, where structures were threatened, but because of a “good containment line around the structures” the properties should be fine, according to Capt. Mary Gutierrez, spokeswoman for San Jose Fire Department.

Two California Department of Forestry helicopters circled overhead dropping water and at least one plane is making chemical drops on the brush fire. Fifteen engines, two dozers and four 2,000-gallon water-tank trucks are on site.

Dan Legan, who with her husband are building a home at the end of Liberata Drive, called 911 shortly after the fire broke out just east of their home.

“I never thought it could spread that fast,” she said of the blaze that burned up a hill toward several homes northeast of their home.

Despite the fire, she said they’ll still move in and are expecting an electrical inspection Friday in anticipation of moving in shortly.

Two hands crews with 17 crew each arrived about 6 p.m. CalFire, Santa Clara County Fire Department and the San Jose Fire Department are represented at the scene. Morgan Hill police officers are also there to navigate traffic and aid the fire crews.
