After more than 18 months of construction, 3,000 hours of “sweat equity” by the new homeowners, and countless hours put in by volunteers, six Morgan Hill families moved into new houses this month. Construction of the homes on Cory Drive was an effort of Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley, with vast assistance from the city of Morgan Hill and area foundations. All six families, who bring a total of 18 children to the new neighborhood, moved out of cramped apartments into the homes they helped build, which range in size from 950 to 1,250 square feet. “It’s our paradise, it’s so big and spacious,” said Martha Esquivel, 43, who moved into her new two-bedroom home with her daughter Elizabeth, 16. The new homeowners were selected through a competitive application process in which they had to meet certain financial benchmarks and their commitment to putting in at least 500 hours of “sweat equity” in construction.
