DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY IS KEY to highway safety
“I just had to comment about a recent fatal accident at Highway 152. Let me see if I get this right. It’s 2:30 in the morning, it’s a rain-soaked road and of the eight people in the car, seven of them are not wearing seat belts and three die.
I think that some of the blame has to go to the stupidity of the people because they know the road is dangerous. Two-thirty in the morning, rain-soaked road; I’m sure excessive sped was a factor. I don’t want to sound unsympathetic, but you can’t blame everything on the road itself. People have to take responsibility and these people were just not being responsible.”

The privilege of driving warrants freedom and most importantly responsibility for yourself, those riding along and those sharing the road with you. Hopefully everyone will be reminded to slow down, exercise safety on behalf of your loved ones and be considerate of the drivers around you while traveling – not only during this holiday season – but every single time we get behind the wheel. Let’s exercise caution out there, avoid the 13, and get where we’re going in one piece.
I’LL MISS THE OLD DUCK POND at community park
“I was saddened when I read your article about the removal of the duck pond at Community Park. I think it’s a beautiful place to spend the afternoon with children.
It seems that this city is so preoccupied with redevelopment and construction, it has lost sight of the small town feel that we all treasure. I for one will be very sad to see the pond go.”

Not all has been said and done yet. There promises to be many meetings on the city level concerning the fate of the duck pond in Community Park. One of the major considerations is the safety of children and pets if they get into the water. Being a collection area for rain runoff and being stagnant for so long, there is a possibility of bacteria and water-borne diseases being present, not to mention the condition of the water due to the solid wastes deposited by our feathered friends.
On the other hand, many people feel just the way you do. They want the pond to stay so it can be enjoyed by visitors.
Like so many other things in life, it may come down to how much will it cost. The pond needs to be maintained in a safe manner, which may include a filtration system being installed. Another question is how many people in the community does the pond serve as compared to how many people would use the playing fields now being considered for the park’s future.
Concerned residents need be aware of the meetings that will be taking place and attend them to voice their opinions.
The public needs to help address dangerous situations. When you see something that’s just not right, let the Red Phone know about it so we can get the answers you need … that’s what we do.
